DC believes sparring with Cain Velasquez makes him favorite for Mir fight

When Brown Pride Daniel Cormier walks down the aisle and enters into the UFC Octagon next week, making his long awaited debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship or the UFC against Frank Mir, many are viewing this match as a step up in his career for DC. However, the former star from Strike Force views things differently.

Cormier isn’t arrogant enough to consider Mir, a former holder of the UFC Heavyweight Championship as a step down from the fighters that he has faced in the past when he went on a rampaging run to win the Strike Force Heavyweight Grand Prix. And the man who wrestled for the US Olympic team on two occasions is smart enough not to weigh his nascent career in Mixed Martial Arts against the accomplishments he has had while wearing a singlet.

But according to Cormier, the one thing that makes him consider no one as formidable is because he has stood up the toughest fighter he has faced in his life, the reigning UFC Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Speaking to the media, Cormier stated that he has always maintained that if he fights with the number one fighter all the time that it takes care of everyone else down the ladder. Every fighter speaks highly of their sparring partners, most try to raise their profile by that. But it cannot be doubted that Cain Velasquez, who spars with Cormier regularly is the alpha male of the UFC Heavyweight division at this moment.

DC further mentioned that there is no confidence like the one he is feeling at the moment. He maintained that he has had the best preparation he could have adding he doesn’t think there is anyone in the division who is tougher than Cain Velasquez and he is extremely confident going into the match against Mir.

Cain Velasquez given new eight fight deal

He already had three more fights left on his contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship but the promotion’s Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez now boasts of a longer contract with the UFC. The UFC recently gave the fighter from San Jose a new and improved eight fight deal ahead of his first defense in his second reign as the UFC Heavyweight champion against Antonio ‘Big Foot’ Silva at UFC 160 on the 25th of May. The Cuban American fighter has an 11-1 Mixed Martial Arts record while he is 9-1 in the UFC.

The announcement of the fighter’s new deal was announced by the president of the UFC Dana White, who made an impassioned speech about the fighter and also defended the policy of the promotion to trim its roster down in recent months after not renewing the contract of several fighters. According to White, Cain Velasquez deserved this new and improved contract based on his performances over the last few months. Following the news that the promotion had given pink slips to many of its stars, critics leveled several accusations against White, mainly for focusing on the bottom line.

But during the press conference, White made it clear that the promotion frequently goes above the contractual obligations towards the fighters it has on its ranks. Or in the case of Velasquez, makes a long term investment on potential.

Speaking of the new contract given to Cain Velasquez, White stated that the company tries to do the right thing more often than not. He also hit back at criticism leveled at the promotion as being money hungry, stating the if they were indeed money hungry, they wouldn’t have gone out and bought the company when it was in dire straits in terms of its finances all those years back from now.

Big Foot confident ahead of Cain Velasquez fight

Little did the Ultimate Fighting Championship or the UFC Heavyweight Championship contender Antonio ‘Big Foot’ Silva know that when he was knocking out another former contender in the form of Dutchman Alistair Overeem at UFC 156, he was actually knocking on the doors of a UFC Heavyweight Championship fight. And that knock was answered by the top brass of the promotion when he was given the chance to fight against the reigning champion Cain Velasquez at UFC 160.

The match is set to be one of the big draws for the UFC of the summer with Silva taking on the man who defeated him in his very first bout in the promotion back in May last year. It was that win over Silva that got Cain Velasquez a shot at the then reigning UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos in December at UFC 155, an opportunity he grabbed with both hands. When the two meet again, it will also give the Cuban American the chance to extend his reign as the champion while also giving the Brazilian the chance to avenge his loss at his hands and also take away the most coveted title in the UFC.

And according to Silva, he has no animosity over Velasquez for the loss and sees the loss as a learning curve. Speaking toTATAME.com, the Brazilian stated that he learned a lot about Cain Velasquez from their previous fight. He stated that he has studied the video of that fight and has improved a lot since then.

He added that he has improved a lot in terms of his technique and his skills as well. He is also confident that Velasquez will not be able to put him away as easily as he managed to do him when the duo met for the first time.
