Fight lovers received a lump of coal in their combined stockings on Saturday.

Ex- UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has been considered medically unfit to fight by the Nevada Athletic Commission thus will not be permitted to fight Fabricio Werdum at T-Mobile Arena on Dec. 30.

NAC executive director Bob Bennett revealed to the Review-Journal an ESPN report.

UFC authorities released a press release late Saturday afternoon verifying that Velasquez had been taken off the card.

Velasquez, who tweeted on Saturday evening he was not aware of any change to the status of his bout, told last week he had routine back surgical procedure for the week after the fight and was treating the pain with prescription Cannabidiol.

UFC Hurrying with Title Fight

Former contender for the Ultimate Fighting Championship or the UFC Heavyweight Championship Frank Mir believes that the company is hurrying in arranging the title match between the champion Junior dos Santos and the contender Cain Velasquez. According to Mir, the UFC should wait it out till the 27th of December, when the doping sanction on Alistair Overeem, the number one contender for the title is lifted so that he could face dos Santos before giving Velasquez a rematch of his defeat last year at the first UFC on FOX pay per view.

Mir, who also suffered defeat at the hands of dos Santos in a total knockout in the first round of their match at UFC 146, stated that it is not as if Junior was not defending his title. He defended the title in November 2011 and again at UFC 146 a couple of months back and for him to fight again for the title would be unfair, both on him and Alistair Overeem.

Overeem was the number one contender for the UFC Heavyweight Championship before his match against dos Santos was called off after he tested positive for the use of banned performance enhancing drugs. Mir stepped into his role and lost the title match to the Brazilian. But he believes that Cain Velasquez should wait for the cycle to finish and not jump the gun, when it comes to the title match as Overeem is still the rightful contender for the title.

Mir also stated that the UFC Heavyweight Championship is a sacred title and defending it so often makes it lose its sheen. The UFC should wait it out till Overeem returns from suspension before putting the title on the line with Cain Velasquez challenging for it, since the return of the Dutchman is only months away.
